Busting Myths and Misconceptions Regarding CBD

Medical marijuana is seen as a medication majorly because of the reputation CBD cannabinoid has acquired. Out of the two primary cannabinoids, THC and CBD, CBD gained more positive light and eventually attracted a market as an individual product with beneficial properties.

THC, on the other hand, gained more attention as a recreational product. This resulted in an inclination towards high CBD and low THC products even among medical patients holding an mmj card California.

While there is no doubt that CBD has medicinal properties and is beneficial for several health conditions, there are some misconceptions about its effects and properties that need to be addressed and busted.

CBD Is Medicine, THC Is Not

This is one of the most common misconceptions among everyone who is aware of the presence and effects of both the cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. Just because THC has the potential to get the user ‘high’, does not necessarily imply that the cannabinoid is limited to just that. There are several other properties and effects of THC that can help one manage the symptoms of severe, incurable health conditions.

CBD Is Non-Psychoactive

CBD is NOT non-psychoactive. Yes, it does not offer a ‘high’ or intoxicating effect but it does have an influence on the psyche or consciousness of the individual. If it had been true about CBD, there could have been no explanation to justify how CBD helps in treating anxiety, stress, depression, and insomnia. CBD has psychoactive properties but they are beneficial and work in a positive manner, instead of impairing the functioning of both body and mind.

CBD Is Sedating

A lot of people believe that CBD helps cure insomnia so it has sedating effects. That is so not the case! CBD has energizing effects on the body. It increases focus, concentration and makes the mind more alert. It is THC that is sedating. CBD makes people feel awake but if they try to sleep after consuming CBD, they shall not face any issues.

Hemp CBD and Cannabis CBD Is the Same

The chemical structure of CBD, no matter what source it is derived from, shall remain the same. But the effect of CBD products, derived from hemp and cannabis, shall not be similar. CBD derived from the cannabis plant may not be as pure as CBD from hemp because of the presence of other components and cannabinoids but there are chances that it shall work better, by creating an entourage effect.

CBD Activates Cannabinoid Receptors

Now this one is pretty common. All of us know how CBD works in our body and what the endocannabinoid system is. Ever since studies regarding the endocannabinoid system and working of marijuana on the human body came out for the public, we have been reading how the cannabinoids activate the cannabinoid receptors of the endocannabinoid system to influence the central nervous system. What if we tell you that it is not true in the case of CBD? CBD does not bind with or directly stimulate either of the two cannabinoid receptors. Instead, it is actually known to turn down the activity level of the cannabinoids resulting in a decrease in the effects of THC. While the cannabinoid directly decreases the signalling, it simultaneously, indirectly has the potential to increase the cannabinoid signalling by inhibiting the breakdown and transport of the anandamide cannabinoid. It may sound a little confusing and difficult to process but that is how CBD works in our system, it may stimulate or suppress the cannabinoid signalling depending on the needs of the body.

Bottom Line

The misconceptions regarding CBD may not have affected the market of CBD per say, but it definitely did affect the opinion and perceptions regarding THC cannabinoid of the cannabis plant. People are becoming more aware about the properties and benefits of the cannabinoids, both individually and together. This has made the importance and benefits of the entourage effect pretty clear too.
